Pop-Pop was as an ancestor, obliquely and impersonally understood, sacred, ghostly. John is more like a son, or a brother to you, all flesh and blood, all beating heart. It means the world for you to glance his way and see his big grin aglow in the limelight.

Sometimes, after a show, you swear you could see old Pop-Pop Crocker's wispy watermark in the sky, shedding a single tear of pride.
